At the end of the 19th century, a school teacher inherits a failing newspaper in a small town in Texas. She and a student discover an alien spacecraft and that the kind alien has begun a friendship with an older resident of the area and several of the town's children. She begins to write about the friendship, bringing unwanted attention to the alien.
