In "The Taming of the Shrew" (1592), we see a young woman Katherina who complains, scolds, and bickers to such an extent that no man can stomach the thought of courting her. She is finally "tamed" by an equally ill-tempered man who marries her merely for her dowry, and proceeds to train her by rather harsh methods.
